A Chasing Mr. Darcy Review
I loved The Cruel Prince, and I loved The Wicked King even more!
Here’s a plot synopsis from GoodReads: Jude has bound the wicked king, Cardan, to her, and made herself the power behind the throne. Navigating the constantly shifting political alliances of Faerie would be difficult enough if Cardan were biddable. But he does everything in his power to humiliate and undermine her, even as his fascination with her remains undiminished. When it becomes all too clear that someone close to Jude means to betray her, threatening her life and the lives of everyone she loves, Jude must uncover the traitor and fight her own complicated feelings for Cardan to maintain control as a mortal in a faerie world.
The Wicked King is the second book in the Folk of the Air trilogy, and it is even better than the first. This book gave us even more moments between Jude and Cardan, and each one was juicier than the last. I ship them so hard, and I will not stand for any slander that denounces them as the perfect couple. I don't care if Cardan has a tail. The scene where Cardan intimately wraps his tail around Jude's leg about did me in. And when Jude tells him, "I hate you. I hate you so much that sometimes I can't think of anything else," I almost combusted on the spot.
I also just love the cast of characters in these books. Even the characters I can't stand, I love. (Take that an unpack it, if you will). The chemistry between the cast of characters as a whole is dynamite, and I don't know how Holly Black created this group. Her mind is truly fascinating! I find Madoc and Jude's stepmother fascinating, and I am crazy captivated by the dynamics of Cardan's friend group. I also love Jude's hodgepodge of assassin friends who just make the story. Together, all these characters should be wildly out of place, but somehow, Holly Black makes them work.
This story just flows. The pieces are crazy, but they fit together like the perfect puzzle. And that ending! OMG. So wild. Talk about a holy cliffhanger.
I cannot say enough positive things about these books. I love this series so much. Read it. You won't be sorry!
