A Chasing Mr. Darcy Review
Here’s a summary from GoodReads: Power is much easier to acquire than it is to hold onto. Jude learned this lesson when she released her control over the wicked king, Cardan, in exchange for immeasurable power. Now as the exiled mortal Queen of Faerie, Jude is powerless and left reeling from Cardan’s betrayal. She bides her time determined to reclaim everything he took from her. Opportunity arrives in the form of her deceptive twin sister, Taryn, whose mortal life is in peril.
Jude must risk venturing back into the treacherous Faerie Court, and confront her lingering feelings for Cardan, if she wishes to save her sister. But Elfhame is not as she left it. War is brewing. As Jude slips deep within enemy lines she becomes ensnared in the conflict’s bloody politics. And, when a dormant yet powerful curse is unleashed, panic spreads throughout the land, forcing her to choose between her ambition and her humanity.
I did not expect to love this book series as much as I did, but I completely fell in love with this world and characters. I'm sorry to see it end!
The Queen of Nothing gives me what I want more than anything: more Jude and more Cardan! I am obsessed with them both, and I shipped them from the very beginning. Jude is a kick ass, no nonsense, powerful woman who does what she wants. I love that about her character! She plans, but then when her plans fall to shit, she flies by the seat of her pants and just takes charge. I also love the way she interacts with the people around her, and she really knows how to push people's buttons. I also really feel for her and all the hurt she's endured. Her love for Madoc is real, and I think her struggle to both defeat him and love him is really under-appreciated in these stories.
And Cardan...oh how I love Cardan's messed up love for Jude. His affection for her was clear from the beginning, and I love the way Holly Black unveiled the depth of his feelings in layers. Cardan is originally perceived as a messed up, angsty boy with issues, but really, he is so much more than that. His issues have a source, a root, and it takes a monumental effort of his own doing for him to take control of his emotions. I loved loved loved the ending Holly Black gave Cardan in this book, and even though I'm terrified of snakes (No spoilers, though!), I was completely captivated by his literal evolution.
I also feel like the sexual tension between Cardan and Jude is pretty heavy for a YA book. I mean, it's not a super open door romance, but it's not completely closed door either. I like that Holly gave us a taste of the steam I know exists between Cardan and Jude. What I wouldn't give for a fully open door take on their relationship!
Overall, I enjoyed this book so much. I am sad that the series is over, but I feel like this conclusion is everything I wanted and more!
