A Chasing Mr. Darcy Review

The second book in the Gilded Age Heiresses series, The Devil and the Heiress kept me hot and bothered from beginning to end. This book was pure steam and fire, and I’m not even a little bit sorry for loving it so much!

Here’s a plot synopsis from Amazon: No one would guess that beneath Violet Crenshaw's ladylike demeanor lies the heart of a rebel. American heiresses looking to secure English lords must be on their best behavior, but Violet has other plans. She intends to flee London and the marriage her parents have arranged to become a published author--if only the wickedly handsome earl who inspired her most outrageously sinful character didn't insist on coming with her. Christian Halston, Earl of Leigh, has a scheme of his own: escort the surprisingly spirited dollar princess north and use every delicious moment in close quarters to convince Violet to marry him. Christian needs an heiress to rebuild his Scottish estate but the more time he spends with Violet, the more he realizes what he really needs is her--by his side, near his heart, in his bed. Though Christian's burning glances offer unholy temptation, Violet has no intention of surrendering herself or her newfound freedom in a permanent deal with the devil. It's going to take more than pretty words to prove this fortune hunter's love is true....

While I loved the first book in this series, I am obsessed with The Devil and the Heiress. I completely fell head over heels for Violet and Christian. Violet is ambitious, brave, entertaining, funny…all the things you could ask for in a leading lady. She knows what she wants, and she’s not willing to sacrifice it to make others happy. I love that about her! She takes chances, even knowing these risky choices might not pay off. I really was inspired by her dedication to her craft in this story; she’s an artist, weaving her canvases with words, and she’s just looking for an outlet for her expression.

Enter Christian…determined to marry Violet at all costs, not realizing its because he loves her. He manipulates the situation to “aid” her in her attempts to run away, all the while plotting to marry her. While he plots, though, his heart takes a leap he is unprepared for. I enjoyed Christian the most out of this story because of his tragic backstory, his character development, and because he’s just sexy as hell. I need a Christian in my life. His character was at turns funny, endearing, conflicted…and the yearning he feels for Violet in this story is almost unbearable. Harper St. George wove a tapestry of need with the yearning between Christian and Violet, and at times it almost made me ache for them. The love between them was sweet and pure, until it wasn’t. Then their story became complicated and difficult, and only a true effort of sacrifice could right the wrongs they endured.

I enjoyed this book from start to finish. I think I finished it in less than 48 hours because I just couldn’t put it down. I love these characters and this world, and I cannot wait for the next in the series!
