A Chasing Mr. Darcy Review

I wasn’t sure what to expect from The Bromance Book Club, but I knew I was excited about reading it. I had read rave reviews of the books, and the fans to the series seemed extremely devoted. Basically, my kind of people! I am so glad I chose to read this book because it is fabulous. Let me say it again for people in the back: it is fabulous!

Here’s a plot synopsis from Amazon: The first rule of book club: You don't talk about book club. Nashville Legends second baseman Gavin Scott's marriage is in major league trouble. He’s recently discovered a humiliating secret: his wife Thea has always faked the Big O. When he loses his cool at the revelation, it’s the final straw on their already strained relationship. Thea asks for a divorce, and Gavin realizes he’s let his pride and fear get the better of him. Welcome to the Bromance Book Club. Distraught and desperate, Gavin finds help from an unlikely source: a secret romance book club made up of Nashville's top alpha men. With the help of their current read, a steamy Regency titled Courting the Countess, the guys coach Gavin on saving his marriage. But it'll take a lot more than flowery words and grand gestures for this hapless Romeo to find his inner hero and win back the trust of his wife.

First off, you gotta love a book that is about a guy who can’t make his wife orgasm…sad thing is he can’t tell she’s been faking it for years until she has a real orgasm one night, and all of a sudden she’s the villain for lying to him when he’s been too self-centered (again, for YEARS) to notice this. Gavin goes through many layers of denial and blame in this story, and eventually, it takes the men of the Bromance Book Club to steer him the right direction. Once he learns how to listen to his wife, the book is a tangled mess of want and need from the two of them as they stumble back to each other.

I really liked that this book tackled a pretty touchy issue? An issue that is a faux pas discussion for so many people? It’s never easy to discuss problems, but in a marriage, I think it’s really important to create an open and honest communication space in the bedroom. So much of a relationship is built on intimacy, and how can that intimacy exist without communication? I feel like this book tackled that issue head-on, and took some steps towards normalizing sexual frustrations among women. Gavin and Thea have to learn to communicate essentially, and both have weight from their past holding them back. Eventually, though, they figure it out (in more ways than one), and it’s a pretty satisfying journey.

I think the main reason I liked this book, though, is the characters. I liked Gavin, and I thought it was really powerful of Lyssa Kay Adams to write a male lead with a stutter (who is also a professional athlete). Pro athletes are really put on a pedestal in the US, and I think writing a character with a stutter in that position allows 1) more people to see themselves in the story, and 2) normalizes problems with speech. I thought the bromance crew was hilarious, and I can’t wait to read more about them. I also really liked Thea; I did think she was too hard on Gavin at times, but overall, I thought her character’s arc was really well developed.

If you haven’t started this series yet, what are you waiting for???? You will love it!
