A Chasing Mr. Darcy Review
Stalking Jack the Ripper is the first in a series by Kerri Maniscalco, and it's a really good read.
Here’s a summary from GoodReads: Seventeen-year-old Audrey Rose Wadsworth was born a lord's daughter, with a life of wealth and privilege stretched out before her. But between the social teas and silk dress fittings, she leads a forbidden secret life. Against her stern father's wishes and society's expectations, Audrey often slips away to her uncle's laboratory to study the gruesome practice of forensic medicine. When her work on a string of savagely killed corpses drags Audrey into the investigation of a serial murderer, her search for answers brings her close to her own sheltered world. The story's shocking twists and turns, augmented with real, sinister period photos, will make this dazzling, #1 New York Times bestselling debut from author Kerri Maniscalco impossible to forget.
Stalking Jack the Ripper is a historical fiction book based on murders in London, but more than that, it's a book that deals with family dynamics, new feelings, and women's progress. And, it deals with all these issues with the precision of a blade, never allowing the interworking of the plot to actually jumble the plot. I love all the different layers to the story, and I found each separate layer engaging.
I really liked Audrey Rose, the main character, and her initiative to learn. Audrey Rose wants to learn forensic science during a time when women are expected to function more as ornaments than minds. She works diligently to improve her knowledge working side by side with her uncle all while navigating her father's smothering. Audrey Rose is smart and capable, but she has to work against the bounds put on women during the time period. I like her tenacity and her drive, and I identified with her thirst for knowledge.
I also really enjoyed the twists and turns of the story. I figured some of the plot points out early on, but others were a surprise for me. I thought the ending was really well done, and it gave me several surprises. I was heartbroken for Audrey Rose by the end because I feel like she had already lost so much, but I thought the ending set up the rest of the series well.
If you're looking for a good historical fiction with a hint of romance, intrigue, danger, and suspense, this is the series for you. Kerri Maniscalco weaves a wonderful tale, and I can't wait to read the rest of the series.
