A Chasing Mr. Darcy Review

Here’s a summary from GoodReads: Laura's business trip to the Channel Islands isn't exactly off to a great start. After unceremoniously dumping everything in her bag in front of the most attractive man she's ever seen in real life, she arrives at her hotel only to realize she's grabbed the wrong suitcase from the airport. Her only consolation? The irresistibly appealing contents of the case: a copy of her favorite book; piano music; and a rugged, heavy knit fisherman sweater only a Ryan Gosling lookalike could pull off. The owner of this suitcase is Laura's dream man--she's sure of it. Now, all she has to do is find him.The mix-up seems written in the stars. After all, what are the odds that she'd find The One on the same remote island where her mom and dad had first fallen in love, especially as she sets out to write an article about their epic romance? Commissioning surly cab driver Ted to ferry her around seems like her best bet in both tracking down the mystery suitcase owner and retracing her parents' footsteps. And if beneath Ted's gruffness lies a wit that makes their cab rides strangely entertaining, so much the better. But as Laura's long-lost luggage soulmate proves difficult to find--and as she realizes that the love story she's held on a pedestal all her life might not have been that perfect--she'll have to rethink her whole outlook on love to discover what she really wants.

I flew through this book, and I loved every page of it. The worst part of the book was that it had to end! Laura was a wonderful main character. Interesting, fun, infuriating, and amazingly blind to what was right in front of her…but wonderful all at the same time. Her zeal for life was infectious, and I enjoyed her hunt for Mr. Right even if the girl can’t read the room to save her life.😂 I thought Laura gave me a lot to aspire to as a person. She wasn't afraid to go after what she wanted. Sometimes, though, it just took her a while to figure out what that was. I liked her, though, and I found myself wishing I could be friends with her in real life. That's always the best feeling to wish for a friendship with the main character of a book! I think it really speaks to the likability of the character.

The whole time Laura is searching for “suitcase man,” I’m screaming at my book, “Have you met Ted?” (IYKYK). Ted was perfection, a tortured soul with a past a mile long and equally heavy baggage despite his lack of a suitcase (again, IYKYK). I loved him from the beginning. I thought his rugged exterior was a shell against the soft, gooey inside, and I was right! Ted has suffered a lot at the hands of love, and I thought his reticence to pursue Laura showed a lot of chivalry. He was concerned about their age difference while also worrying about saddling her with his baggage. The best part about finding someone who is perfect for you, though, is that suddenly that baggage doesn't feel near as heavy. Ted needed someone to bring light to his life, and he just needed the courage to pursue it.

JHMYY also deals with some pretty heavy issues, like divorce and terminal illness. I don’t want to give too much away about the plot, but I found this story a poignant, meaningful tale that truly showcases how important life’s decisions are at the end of one’s life.

Just Haven’t Met You Yet is one of my favorite books of 2021. Please pick up this book…you won’t be sorry! Reading it was like a balm for my soul.
