A Chasing Mr. Darcy Review
I don't know who LovesBitca8 is, but she deserves writing awards. Her books are fabulous! All the Wrong Things is a retelling of her first novel, The Right Thing To Do, except it's from Draco's POV this time. I listened to this book on the ETL Echo podcast in the Apple podcast app.
Here’s a summary in my own words: All the Wrong Thing is told from Draco Malfoy's POV, and it follows his time after his release from Azkaban as he manages his new life and his old feelings for Hermione Granger.
This author has Draco down to an art. His sarcastic, snippy internal monologue was hilarious. I laugh out so many times at Draco's dry, sarcastic wit that it made me yearn for a story in which he lets his walls down. I can't count the number of times I laughed, honestly, because his sarcasm is that funny. His pain is also palpable in this book. He yearns for Hermione and for a life in which he can let his feelings show, and he struggles to rid himself of his father's shadow. I love his nerve and his determination. I also love that he punches Ron Weasley FINALLY in these stories; it was too long coming. I especially like this part of the story told from his POV because we finally learn what really went down during the fight. What a glorious moment for Ron Weasley to get punched, let me tell you! I hate him even more for sucker punching Draco during this scene, if that is even possible.
I also kind of love the constant miscommunication between Draco and Hermione, with Draco believing Hermione indifferent and Hermione believing Draco indifferent. I like the tension that builds as they dance around each other, deciding who will make the first, then second, and then third move to push them forward. It's so reflective of real life, when you're uncertain of another's feelings, and the way you both quite literally dance around the affection you feel until you just can't anymore. Usually, miscommunication like this just annoys me because I'm a straight forward person, but in this scenario, it was written to perfection!
I don't think I mentioned Narcissa and Lucius in my review of the first book, but let me tell you...Narcissa Malfoy could run the freaking world. She brings meddling into the room as an Olympic sport, and she can read her only child like an open book. Well freaking done, Narcissa, well freaking done. She is amazing in these stories, particularly when you get the insight into her interactions with Draco in this version. Lucius himself is also the master manipulator, albeit he doesn't have the same touch as Narcissa. While Lucius' methods are effective, you still think him a right bastard at the end. Narcissa delicately leads you to the outcome she wants, pulling you along by the nose without you so much as flinching about the fact that she has you on a lead. It's really quite masterfully written, truth be told, the whole story.
If you are a fan of Harry Potter (like me), but you feel icky about giving JKR a cent of your money because of her transphobic views, this fan fiction will scratch your Harry Potter itch and then some. I enjoyed it immensely, and the narrator on ETL Echo is fabulous. I don't know who she is, but she is probably half the reason I'm enjoying these stories so much. Her voice is just captivating!
Check out this series. It is so good. As for me, I'm off to listen to the third book in the series, The Auction (IYKYK).
