A Chasing Mr. Darcy Review
I really appreciate every galley I'm given from Net Galley. Publishers don't have to give me anything to read early, and they choose to do it to get feedback on their works. I feel bad every time I don't absolutely love a book I'm allowed to read early, but that's the boat I'm in for A Spot of Trouble by Teri Wilson. This book publishes on September 7, 2021.
Here’s a plot synopsis from GoodReads: Violet March and Sam Nash are as different as night and day and have been enemies ever since Violet accused Sam of dognapping her beloved Dalmatian. Sam knows that’s impossible—for one thing, his dog Cinder is a well-trained fire safety dog who never steps out of line. Violet’s dog Sprinkles, on the other hand, has never met a command that she didn’t ignore completely, much like her bubbly owner. So when Sprinkles and Cinder accidentally switch places during the annual police vs. fire department softball tournament, Violet is thrilled by her dog’s sudden perfect behavior, while stubborn-yet-charming Sam is horrified to find that his dog no longer listens. But when the dogs are eventually switched back, Sam and Violet are shocked to find that not everything is as simple as it seems. And a little puppy love might be just the thing they’ve been missing.
There is nothing wrong with this book. It's a cute, fun closed door romance about an enemies to lovers trope. The main characters are cute, the dogs are cute, the supporting cast is cute...and therein lies the problem for me. I've really got nothing special to tell you about A Spot of Trouble. Is it fun? Sure. Did I breeze through it? Also, sure. Was it really memorable? No.
The story pulls from the meet cute for Roger and Anita in 101 Dalmatians (the cartoon), and there are other facets pulled from the cartoon as well. These work in the story, but normally, I'm not a fan of such heavy borrowing from a previous work. I also never got invested in these characters or the outcome, and I honestly didn't care if they ended up together or if Sam went back to Chicago.
I was on a solid two star path for this book until the end, and I really thought the twist with the dogs was cute. Violet's surrogate mother figures really saved the day for my star rating. I don't know why I liked the twist so much (no spoilers), but I did...and that earned A Spot of Trouble three stars from me.
If you like closed door, simple romances with an enemies to lovers trope, you will probably like this book. I'm more of an open door gal, so that could be part of my issue with this book too...I kept waiting for something to happen and got left with a whole bunch of nothing instead.
If you read this one and like, let me know! It has a lot of cute aspects.
